The olfactory sensations refer to all those sensations captured directly through the nose, which is also directly connected with our sense of taste. The importance of smell is such that we even use expressions and phrases that show metaphorically the transcendence of smells to transmit sensations:
- In this whole thing there is something that smells bad
- I can smell your fear of this situation
- You can smell the problems miles away
- This is as nice as the smell of coffee in the morning
Smells have meanings and functions
People also often make olfactory associations to specific emotional moments or memories. For example, the smell of freshly cut grass reminds us of springtime, the smell of a perfume reminds us of someone, a gel or shampoo evokes us the house of that relative where we spent the summers at, without forgetting such characteristic and unmistakable smells as toasted bread, the chlorine smell of swimming pools or the smell of a bookstore.
Smells and sexual attraction
There is a strong association between our sense of smell, sex and passion, and both men and women use perfumes and colognes in an effort to attract the opposite sex. Pheromones, those chemicals secreted by all animals – including us humans – are designed to provoke reactions or behaviors in other members of the same species.
Smells to Influence Mood
The sense of smell can and should be used to reduce tension and stress. It is precisely for this reason that there are well-known aromatherapy treatments, similar to massage therapy but using pleasant aromas. In Santaimasajes we do not offer individual aromatherapy services, but we use the aromatherapy itself to complement the massages we perform.
Examples of fragrances and their purposes
Here are some fragrances or mixtures of them that can be used for a large number of purposes:
- Peppermint to help you feel more active and energetic.
- Jasmine to help you fall asleep.
- Lavender, one of our favorites, to induce relaxation.
- Vanilla to help with weight loss.
Some of these fragrances have historically been used to reduce stress, anxiety and depression and the benefits of odors have long been known. Much more information related to odors and their importance in moods can be found in this article from the journal Psychology Today.
Combining smell with other senses is key
When using the sense of smell to reduce stress, the use of this sense of smell should be combined with colors, temperature, and sensations that complement a particular fragrance. For example, it is not logical to use peppermint aromas, which help you feel more active and energetic, with an atmosphere of warm colours and Hindu mantras that try to relax the person. In Santai Masajes we are experts in using smells to get the most out of your erotic massage!
