Importance of smell in relaxation

The olfactory sensations refer to all those sensations captured directly through the nose, which is also directly connected with our sense of taste. The importance of smell is such that we even use expressions and phrases that show metaphorically the transcendence of smells to transmit sensations:

  • You can smell the problems miles away
  • This is as nice as the smell of coffee in the morning

Smells have meanings and functions

People also often make olfactory associations to specific emotional moments or memories. For example, the smell of freshly cut grass reminds us of springtime, the smell of a perfume reminds us of someone, a gel or shampoo evokes us the house of that relative where we spent the summers at, without forgetting such characteristic and unmistakable smells as toasted bread, the chlorine smell of swimming pools or the smell of a bookstore.

There is a strong association between our sense of smell, sex and passion, and both men and women use perfumes and colognes in an effort to attract the opposite sex. When using the sense of smell to reduce stress, the use of this sense of smell should be combined with colors, temperature, and sensations that complement a particular fragrance. For example, it is not logical to use peppermint aromas, which help you feel more active and energetic, with an atmosphere of warm colours and Hindu mantras that try to relax the person.
